SANTAMARTA aims to promote circularity and self-reliance of people, through products but also services, which promote reuse, manufacturing, authenticity and reflection, leaving aside the preferences of the economic system.
At SANTAMARTA we are environmentally and socially committed, the entire project is driven by a social and environmental action plan, and a strict objective of transparency that people can trust and take part in.
From small collections of garments made through upcycling in collaboration with social associations, to artistic pieces, all products are designed and manufactured following eco-design strategies. These ensure commitment to generating a positive impact on people and the environment, taking care from pre-production to packaging and post-consumer.
This includes adapting the patterns to the discarded textile, locally sourcing the materials and manufacturing the pieces at our Madrid-based studio ensuring the minimum waste.
In our mission to explore the possibilities of discarded objects and textiles, we not only offer sustainability in materials or processes, but consider all aspects of society that can be tools for a natural balance, and not necessarily monetized; offering lectures, synergic collaborations, and social projects to get involved in, designing a lifestyle in harmony with what surrounds us.
It motivates us to think that good quality garments that were going to end up in a landfill have now extended their life cycle by turning into design pieces.
how we produce our pieces
fabric sourcing
Finding the best quality textiles is key to secure the longest life-cycle of the garment, that is why we manually select each piece looking for genuine leather, wool, cotton, prioritizing natural fibers. These second hand garments come from local vintage suppliers and textile recycling companies with whom we collaborate by reincorporating their waste into our supply chain.

unpicking
Every garment is unpicked and disassembled, ironing the seam allowances and hemlines to maximize the use of its textile. We also remove its buttons, zippers, waistbands, shoulder pads and lining, that when in good condition are placed in the new garments.

adapted pattern making
To achieve the minimum waste and to get the most out of the garment, our patterns are composed of small pieces that can easily fit in each second hand clothing. As a part of our eco-design strategies, we study the standard measurements of our raw material in order to create the perfect pattern.
cut & sewing
cut & sewing are also handmade at our Madrid based studio or in local associations’ ateliers. We work close to craftsmanship, taking into account the nature and characteristics of each of the second hand pieces, making every piece unique.

waste
Our commitment with reusing what is already produced makes us explore the possibilities that our own waste has. That is why we also use it to make accessories such as our iconic Bra bag or the Fleur gargantilla, made with our own stockings’ scraps. Also artistic pieces and sculptures are created from what we no longer used for clothing production.
For ss24 collection we used production scraps for creating dust-bags that served as packaging for the clothes.
