denim
Story
The story behind denim is well known: a durable fabric designed to withstand outdoor manual labor and that can be easily repaired time and time again. Moreover, it is one of the most widely used fabrics in everyday life. Almost everyone wears jeans or denim jackets at some point during the year, thanks to the versatility of its style. For all these reasons this is a perfect fabric for upcycling, there is a significant amount of denim that can be recovered.
Impact
Denim is mainly made from cotton, a natural fiber that is intensively cultivated. Huge amounts of water and use of pesticides that cause loss of biodiversity are required to produce large-scale. As if that were not enough, the indigo dyeing processes used for denim pollute water and seriously harm the health of the workers involved, as safety measures are often inadequate or completely absent. Sandblasting, the technique used to give denim its worn appearance, is one of the industry’s most controversial practices due to the severe respiratory illnesses it can cause. Reusing is again the best option possible.
